Description
A finely potted Kraak plate with the characteristic moulded panelled decoration, painted in soft and darker tones of underglaze cobalt blue. The decoration is executed with a more spontaneous brushwork. The central scene depicts a bird perched on a rock, beside luxuriantly growing bamboo with its tips reaching into ruyi-shaped clouds. To the left, another bird is shown in the water among lotus leaves, with a mountain range in the distance beneath the rising sun. The rim is divided into ten large panels decorated with flowers, water plants, insects, birds, and a frog, separated by undecorated white spaces. The reverse is decorated with alternating large panels of lingzhi and insects, divided by smaller panels containing stylised cloud motifs. The centre bears an egret mark with a slightly open beak.
