Description
A finely potted Kraak plate with moulded panelled decoration, painted in soft and slightly purplish tones of underglaze cobalt blue. The central cartouche depicts a suspended gourd decorated with floral motifs, surrounded by a tassel, two flaming ruyi motifs, and luxuriant ribbons. The cartouche is framed by alternating fish-scale and coin motifs. The rim is divided into ten panels decorated with flowers, two of which contain birds and one a butterfly among peaches. The reverse is similarly divided and decorated with alternating lingzhi and insects, interrupted by stylised cloud motifs. According to Maura Rinaldi, only eight known examples of this type bearing an Egret mark exist. This example is illustrated and discussed in Maura Rinaldi’s book Kraak Porcelain: A Moment in History.
