- Vlaamse Kunstcollectie: Barok in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden - Het oeuvre van Jacques Callot (link), where it is stated that (original in Dutch language, now translated): The Temptation of Saint Anthony is undoubtedly Callot's masterpiece and is the culmination of his technical prowess, his rich imagination and his predilection for theatrical effects. Saint Anthony is tempted and tormented by devils and demons. This theme was already popular in the Middle Ages, and symbolizes the Christian soul tempted by worldly pleasures. In hell, some personifications of the deadly sins are presented, such as Vanity, Lust and Envy. Contrary to medieval interpretations of the subject, Saint Anthony is no longer depicted here as a victim, but as a conqueror: with his crucifix he keeps the devil at bay. It again symbolizes the triumph of the Catholic Church overcoming evil.
