An impressive Chinese gilt-decorated grisaille 42-piece armorial dinner service with the arms of Lumsden for the English market, Qianlong, ca. 1785

This impressive service comprises one large serving dish, two smaller serving dishes, nine soup plates and 30 plates. The arms are of the Lumsden family of Innergellie, with the motto “Beware in time.” This service was made for John Lumsdaine of Blanerne, Innergellie, and Lathallan, born in 1745, son of Robert Lumsden and Sophia Lundin. He served as a major in the Honourable East India Company and later acquired the Lathallan estate. He died in 1823 and was succeeded by his son James Lumsdaine, a medical officer in Sumatra, who returned to Scotland in 1824 and married Sophia Lindsay of Balmanzie. (Source: D.S.
