Description
Each thinly potted with deep rounded sides rising from a neatly finished foot ring to a slightly flaring rim, the exterior pierced in the linglong technique with a cash-diaper ground enclosing four circular medallions. The medallions are painted in underglaze blue with landscape scenes depicting scholars, pavilions, rockwork and trees. The decoration is bordered above and below by continuous ruyi-head bands, while the interior is plain beneath a clear glaze. The underside of the rim and the recessed base are left unglazed, as is typical of this group.
Bowls of this type are known from the Hatcher Cargo, the contents of a Chinese merchant vessel lost in the South China Sea in the mid-seventeenth century. The present pair, however, is not a shipwreck find and remains in remarkably good condition, with a smooth glaze and well-preserved reticulation.
