Description
Each of rectangular section with gently tapering sides rising from a recessed base to a short cylindrical neck, finely painted in rich underglaze blue with flowering prunus and peony issuing from rockwork within moulded panel borders, the narrow sides similarly decorated with flowering branches and ornamental plants, all reserved within geometric diaper borders.
These elegant square bottle vases belong to a distinctive group of Kangxi blue and white porcelains produced for export to the European market during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Their unusual form derives ultimately from European glass bottles, reflecting the increasing exchange of artistic ideas and consumer tastes fostered by maritime trade between China and Europe through the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
