Description
The ovoid jar is finely painted with a continuous naturalistic landscape. One side depicts a magpie standing on a branch atop a weathered scholar’s rock, surrounded by flowering peonies, bamboo and leafless branches, while the reverse is decorated with blossoming plants, bamboo and two birds in flight amongst flowering sprays.
The combination of flowering plants, bamboo and birds conveys wishes for longevity, resilience and harmony, while the dramatic scholar’s rock evokes the cultivated taste of the literati. The bold treatment of the rockwork and the use of graduated cobalt washes are typical features of high-quality Transitional blue and white porcelain produced at Jingdezhen.
The jar has a broad unglazed mouth and a recessed glazed base enclosed by a neatly finished foot rim. It is accompanied by a well-fitted carved hardwood cover with an openwork shou (longevity) medallion.
