Schalkius van Beeftingh established a sugar refinery in Rotterdam at the beginning of the 18th century, which remained in the family until 1841. The Van Beeftingh van der Dussen family, a combination of family names, played a significant role in the city's administration and were prominent art collectors. Their marks are also found on some syrup pots unearthed in the city in 2021.
