The scenes of two first milk jugs are based off Aesob's fables, 1723 edition, engravings by Elisha Kirkal, 'The old man and his sons' and 'The Sheep-biter'. (see scans)
The scene on the third jug is based on an engraving by Audran, possible after Watteau. (see scan)
