On the first page, four leading Belgian missionaries are portrayed: Monseigneur Jeroom Van Aertselaer (1845-1924), Monseigneur Everard Ter Laak (1868-1931), Emiel Vloebergs (1877-1937) and one unidentified.
They were part of a group of 55 missionaries who started a catholic mission in the region of Xiwanzizhen, in the province of Hebei, in 1862. Other images show the early signs of industrialisation, including one of the mission's printing presses in Xiwanzizhen.
