(link) She states for example: 'Emerging in large quantities when the China trade flour­ished, these works were first produced in Canton (Guang­zhou) when the city was the sole port of access to China for foreign trade from 1757 to 1842, and later in other trade ports, such as Shanghai and Hong Kong.'
