With a label on the base for Leon Gruel, Relieur d'Art, Objets et Livres Anciens, 418 Rue St. Honoré, Paris.
Gruel (1840-1923) was the first president of the French bookbinder's association. He probably recovered the interior and underside of the box.

Condition:
- Overall in reasonably good condition with minor areas of restoration - mostly inpainting to complete the gilt pattern - and typical wear: slight cracks in the leather, staining and discoloration.
- The lock possibly a later replacement, given a hole on the right handside of the lock on both the lid and the box.
- With an area of restoration on the right side, mostly on the lower part of the lid, with some inpainting.
- With an area of unevenness on the back where the hinges are located,
