An exceptional polychrome Dutch Delft pocket watch stand, dated 1772

235
This lot was sold on 2021-10-08 and is no longer available

Important notice: please note that the pocket watch is not included in this lot, but offered separately in the previous lot.

Dim.: 34 x 26 x 5 cm

Condition: (UV-checked)
- Please note that the origin of this piece may actually be Rouen, France, and not Delft, The Netherlands. It is very difficult to distinguish one from the other, but the Rouen attribution does seem to be more likely.
- The object is overall in good condition, ready for display. It stands up nicely, but we would recommend placing something behind it, have it lean against a wall or mount it on a stand as it lacks the balance required to stand up hassle-free. There are typical small superficial glaze abrasions and negligible minor wear throughout.
- The left foot with two reglued breaks and some related retouching.
- The right foot with a small superficial chip filled.
- In the upper part, some restoration is showing under UV-light. Due to the nature of the repair it is difficult to exactly assess what's been mended, but it would seem as if a break was restored which detached the watch medallion and upper ornament from the body. On the flat back, however, there is no evidence of restoration or overspraying, which implies that the clock medallion was only detached from the body for about half of its depth.
- Two small holes are visible next to the shell ornament on top, possibly for attaching a wire or cord.

Dated 1772 on the base.
