The profile bust flanked by the letters IN and RI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum or 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'.
According to the Evangelist John, Pilate had written this on the plaque above Christ's head on the cross.
The sun and moon allude to the cosmic significance of his sacrifice. The back of the plaque crudely decorated.
