H.: 80 cm

Provenance: A French private collection.

The present tulip vase is unusual in many ways. While it is closely inspired on Dutch examples, it is likely of French or Belgian origin. Plain white examples of these lavish vases are almost non-existent. The shape is inspired by the famous pair of blue and white examples, commissioned by Queen Mary II prior to her death in 1694. This pair, part of the Royal Collection Trust, is on display at Hampton Court (link). The twisted base is a feature rarely encountered on original 17th C. examples. Another similarity is found in the central oval medallions, which bear the royal coat of arms.
