Only a small number of photographs depicting Guido Gezelle are known, most of them in the collection of the Bruges city archives.
Guido Gezelle (1830-1899) was appointed in 1872 as assistant pastor of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe parish in Kortrijk. He continued to live in Kortrijk until shortly before his death. It is known that he regarded his transfer from Bruges as a punishment, but soon he felt at home in Kortrijk. In a short time he acquired a very wide circle of acquaintances, both among the simple folk and among the well-to-do bourgeoisie. The Nolf-Beck family in Kortrijk disposed of an amateur photo laboratory, where they developed several photos of the famous Belgian pastor-poet. A closely related image of Gezelle and the family is published in Couttenier, 1992: Guido Gezelle. Wisselende beelden van een dichter' (link).
