The work depicts the coat of arms of Duke Adolph I of Cleves (1373-1448). The larger coat of arms represents the house of Cleves. The inner coat of arms belongs to the Duke of Burgundy, John the Fearless, his father-in-law through his second wife Mary of Burgundy (1393-1442). After their wedding the couple resided in the castle of Wijnendale near Bruges.
