An extremely rare Dutch Delft 'Persian Blue' shield-shaped condiment dish, late 17th C.

An extremely rare Dutch Delft 'Persian Blue' shield-shaped condiment dish, late 17th C.

Dim.: 12,2 x 13,1 cm

Marked on the back 'DAPW' above a numeral two for the "De Paauw" workshop, Delft, late 17th C. A label on the back suggests that the dish has been designed or decorated by Dutch ceramic artist Claes J. Messchert, son-in-law to Dirck Hieronimus van Kessel, first owner of the 'De Paauw' workshop. Paon refers to the type of blue tin-glaze used.

Provenance: Ex-collection Voûte, with a label on the back. Probably Mari Paul Voûte, Jr. (1882–1955), Baarn, The Netherlands, whose collection was sold at Frederik Muller & Cie., Amsterdam, 17th-25th April, 1956.
