This inscribed Canton famille rose service forms part of a rare group of mid-19th-century Chinese export porcelains bearing personalised English inscriptions. Each piece is inscribed on a reserved band: “Dr. D. Young. With Tang Kah Sheong’s best compliments.”
A related saucer from the same service is illustrated by David Sanctuary Howard (vol. II, p. 685), who compares it to a similarly inscribed blue and white service presented to Dr. G. H. B. Wright, both likely gifts from grateful patients.

Regarding the origin of the 'Cheng Qu Mao Tang 城曲茅堂' mark:
Lan Ying 藍瑛 (1585-1666), was an outstanding painter of the Ming Dynasty. His courtesy name was Tianshu 田叔, and he was also known by several other pseudonyms such as Diesou, later Shitoutuo, Shanggong, Wanzhuan Azhuzhe, Xihu Yanmin, and Dongguo Laonong. His residence bore the inscription 'Cheng Qu Mao Tang (城曲茅堂)'. He was from Qiantang (modern-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang), and was one of the representative painters of the later Zhejiang school.
Lan Ying was skilled in calligraphy and painting, excelling particularly in flowers and birds, plum blossoms and bamboo; with landscapes being his most renowned genre. His landscape painting followed the traditions of the Song and Yuan dynasties, but he also developed his own distinctive style. He was influenced by the painter Shen Zhou, inspired by his delicate and elegant brushstrokes. He studied and imitated the works of painters from the Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties, with a special dedication to Huang Gongwang. In his later years, his brushwork became vigorous and powerful, with a grand and imposing style, comparable to Wen Zhengming and Shen Zhou. His notable works include "Autumn Mountains with Red Leaves", "Conversations on the Riverbank", "White Clouds and Red Trees", "High Autumn in Pine Mountains", and "Majestic Trees on Rocky Cliffs". His painting style had a significant influence in the late Ming period, and many followed his techniques.

In 1909, the 13th Dalai Lama, having fled Tibet in the wake of the British invasion and subsequent Chinese military advance, returned from exile in Mongolia and northern China. During this period he travelled extensively and was granted an imperial audience in Beijing in 1908 with Empress Dowager Cixi and the Guangxu Emperor.
With nominal approval from the Qing court, he re-entered Lhasa in December 1909. This restoration proved short-lived, however, as Chinese troops reoccupied the city in 1910, forcing him once again into exile, this time to India.
While in exile, the Dalai Lama journeyed through Mongolia and eastern Tibet before approaching Beijing, where he was received with the honours accorded to a sovereign by Empress Dowager Cixi and the Guangxu Emperor in October 1908. According to some historians, this audience symbolically marked the end of his temporal authority in the eyes of the Qing dynasty.

The arms are of the De Heere family of Middelburg and Dordrecht. The plate was part of a service commissioned by Huijbrecht Johan De Heere, who worked for the VOC.
The dating and identification of this service has been subject of change over the years due to the lack of decoration, estimates varying from 1735 to 1765 (the coat of arms appears on a seal mark as early as 1735). The De Heere family originated from Middleburg and Dordrecht in the Netherlands. (Sources: Kroes, 2007, C. Jörg, 1997, Cohen & Cohen, November 2000)

The 'Scotsmen' or 'Highlanders' decoration counts as one of the most important and iconic imageries seen on Chinese export art. The figures in the centre depict a piper and a private from the 42nd Regiment of Foot, a predecessor to the famous Black Watch. The source print of the piper is discussed by David Sanctuary Howard, 'Chinese Porcelain of the Jacobites - I', Country Life, January 25, 1973. Howard notes that the piper was taken from an engraving by George Brickham and published on A short history of the Highland Regiment, London, 1743; and the private was also after a drawing by Brickham of the same date. Members of the regiment deserted the Stuart cause, and on July 18, 1743, Privates Samuel, Farquar Shaw, Malcolm McPherson were executed at the Tower for the mutiny, and a Piper Macdonnel was sent to Georgia, USA, as a convict. These men were seen as Jacobite martyrs, and memorialized on plates and punch bowls bearing these figures.

Erotic art is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China, and was already flourishing in pre-Imperial times. With its peak during the late-Ming period, this art remained a fixed feature in Chinese literature and visual arts until well into the 20th century.
Chinese erotic art is a search for beauty in all its manifestations, for not only does it offer stimulation, it provides a source of great aesthetic pleasure. It never presents sex in a crude or pornographical way, but within a framework of beauty and harmony, enhanced with details of a profound or symbolic nature.

The knob on the necks of these bottles makes them easy to grip, even with wet or greasy hands. The shape was developed in the Middle East, where people ate with their hands. The Chinese later made them in porcelain for export to the Middle East and Europe, where they were also used for washing. They are sometimes known as 'gugglets' because of the gurgling sound they make when pouring.

This Ko-Sometsuke blue and white plate, produced for the Japanese market, combines the symbolic language of traditional Chinese auspicious imagery with a decorative style attuned to Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, and is executed with a deliberate use of reserved white space in underglaze blue. The centre of the dish is painted with blooming plum blossoms. Above the blossoms, a pair of magpies in flight conveys the rebus 'Xi Shang Mei Shao', expressing happiness reaching the eyebrows, while below, a pair of pheasants symbolises 'Jin Shang Tian Hua', adding splendour to prosperity. Together, these auspicious motifs express layered wishes for joy and good fortune.

Blue John is a rare, banded variety of fluorite, found only in Derbyshire, England, prized for its striking blue and purple colours and used in decorative objects and jewelry. The name “Blue John” likely comes from the French phrase bleu-jaune, meaning “blue-yellow,” reflecting its colouration.
