Naturalistically modelled as a boar’s head, this rare tureen showcases the refined craftsmanship of the Qianlong period, with finely incised bristles, expressive features, and delicate enamels lending both realism and charm. Inspired by European faience and commissioned for export, such whimsical yet sophisticated pieces were prized centrepieces at aristocratic banquets. When filled with hot soup, steam rising from the nostrils heightened the theatrical effect.
Animal-form tureens gained popularity in mid-18th century Europe, with examples in faience and soft-paste porcelain produced at Strasbourg, Palissy, Chelsea, and Höchst. The Chelsea auction of 1755 listed “a very curious tureen in the form of a boar’s head.” Chinese artisans responded to this demand with exquisite porcelain versions for the Western market.
Dutch East India Company records note an order of 25 boar’s head tureens in 1763, of which only 19 were shipped the following year before the line was deemed “too risky,” underscoring their rarity.

The print source for this design was identified by Mr. W. Motley in 2019. The image is from an engraving of Autumn from The Seasons by Johann Georg Hertel of circa 1750, based on four gouaches by Johann Esaias Nilson (1721-1788). Two others from the series, Spring and Summer are also found on Chinese export items. The unusual rococo border decoration on the plates is also found framing the prints.
The design however is clearly based on the fashion in the eighteenth century for a genre of painting, fetes galantes, popularized by artists like Watteau and Lancret, in which many figures populate an idyllic pastoral landscape and enjoying music, reading or picnics. (Source: Mr. W. Motley)

The scene, depicting a couple in a garden, was taken from an engraving entitled Le Printemps by Nicolas de Larmessin III (1684-1755), a French print-maker. This was part of a series of engravings, Les Quatre Saisons, devoted to the four seasons and produced around 1740-45, after a painting by Nicholas Lancret (1690-1743) of 1738.

The arms are of Troutbeck of Dunham, Cheshire. The arms on this service are incorrectly painted, with the shield gules instead of azure. A later service was delivered around 1780 with the correct coat of arms.
According to Howard, both services remained together with the same family descendants until 2001.

Likely intended as a tête-à-tête tea tray, this bears a central gold inscription: 'EMILY. CANTON. 1879.'. While a ship named Emily was clearly in Canton in 1879, efforts to identify her—among 23 ships and 6 British yachts of that name listed in Lloyd’s Register—have been inconclusive.

The inscription on the bottom of the cup reads: 'Koninglijke Marine - J.C.J. Van Speyk - 5 Febr 1831 - Voor Vaderland & Vorst', which can be translated as: 'Royal Navy - J.C.J. Van Speyk - 5 February 1831 - For Fatherland and King'.
In early 1831 during the Belgian Revolution (which began in 1830), Van Speyk was commanding Kanonneerboot no. 2 near Antwerp. His ship was forced by a storm into the dock near Antwerp. Belgian revolutionaries attempted to board it and demanded surrender. Van Speyk refused, saying something like, “Dan liever de lucht in” (“Then rather take to the air / I'd rather blow up (than surrender)”). He then ignited gunpowder on his vessel, causing it to explode, choosing death over surrender. His act turned him into a symbol of national pride and sacrifice in the Netherlands.
The act has been remembered in many poems, memorials, artworks, coins, medals, and places named after him, of which this is a rare example.

The mark, Shen De Tang Bo Gu Zhi 慎德堂博古製, translates to ‘Made in the antique style for the Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue’.
This hall mark appears on porcelains from the early Kangxi period and on imperial porcelains from the Daoguang period. The Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue was one of the private imperial residences of the old Summer Palace, the Yuanmingyuan, located northwest of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The hall was originally built by the Kangxi emperor and was expanded by the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors. Eventually the Daoguang emperor, who reigned from 1821-1850, used the hall as a daily residence until his death. The entire complex, including the Shendetang, was destroyed by European troops in 1860.

In 1690, the citizens of the Dutch city of Rotterdam, incensed by a brutally unfair punishment pronounced by their magistrate, ran riot and tore down the magistrate’s house. This act became known as the 'Costerman revolt' or the 'Rotterdam Riot' and was commemorated in a cast medallion from which the plates, also ordered to commemorate the event, were painted. This is the first European historical/political event ever to be produced on Chinese export porcelain.

This blue and white baoyueping or bianhu (moonflask) decorated with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, is a masterpiece of Qing imperial porcelain. The Qing emperors maintained close ties with Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism, with the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors themselves engaging in religious practice; the lotus-trellised Eight Emblems on the body of this flask stand as a vivid testament to this devotion. The form derives from early Ming prototypes of the Yongle and Xuande reigns, refined and reinterpreted during the Yongzheng period. Fewer than twenty comparable examples are known on the market, the great majority bearing Qianlong marks, while Yongzheng-marked pieces are of the utmost rarity. According to Qing court archives, a pair of Yongzheng blue and white Eight Emblems moonflasks was once preserved in the Yonghe Palace.

Chinese porcelain with this decoration was almost certainly produced for the Dutch market, appearing both in underglaze blue and gilt, as well as in famille rose enamels. The design likely derives from botanical drawings in the style of the Dutch-Swiss naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1646–1717), who travelled to Surinam and published her celebrated Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium in Holland in 1705 (and later in France in 1771 as Histoire Générale des Insectes de Surinam et de toute l’Europe). It has also been suggested that the border motifs and floral elements relate to designs by Cornelis Pronk, the Dutch draughtsman commissioned by the VOC during the same period.

Marked on the base for Ary de Milde, the "De Gecroonde Theepot" workshop, Delft, 1678-1724.
Ary de Milde was one of three Delft potters experimenting with fine red stonewares in imitation of contemporary Chinese teapots imported from Yixing. The other two were Lambertus Cleffius of the 'Metal Pot' pottery and Samuel van Eenhoorn, owner of the 'Greek A' factory. While all three were given permission to sell their own marked red stonewares, nothing is known for certain of the products of these last two, while more is known about the wares of Ary de Milde as they are usually marked with his name and symbol of a running fox in an oval medallion. Unlike the Chinese redwares which were built out of slabs of clay and hand-modelled, de Milde's teapots were thrown on a wheel. De Milde died in 1708, his son-in-law in 1717, and his daughter Elisabeth closed the pottery in January 1724.

Plate (Tagliere) of tin-glazed earthenware, decorated in brown on a dark blue ground. Painted with the portrait of cupid holding bow and arrow, in a medallion surrounded by a border of trophies of arms and musical instruments. The inscriptions on the banner (1560, SPQP) may suggest that the plate was ordered for an official from the Padua region, SPQP being an acronym for Senatus Populusque Paduensis.

This albarello is part of the best-documented pharmacy commission of the 16th C.
The order was placed in 1562 with potters in Casteldurante by a Genovese merchant, Andrea Boerio, who lived in Palermo in Sicily. Boerio ordered, in two successive contracts, several hundred albarelli and other storage jars, carefully specifying the forms, sizes, and decoration; some were to be istoriato and some with trofei (trophies). Unhappily for the potters, the brothers Ludovico and Angelo Picchi, they failed to deliver all these jars on time and were taken to the Duke of Urbino's court by Boerio and forced to pay compensation. Over fifty jars survive, bearing, like this one, the arms of Boerio.
The Picchi brothers were the sons of the Casteldurante potter Giorgio Picchi, who had died by 1535. Their workshop became one of the most productive in the town and may have employed several painters. The painter of these albarelli appears to have been the most prolific painter of istoriato designs in Casteldurante in the 1550's. He was, notably, the main or only painter of an extensive service with unidentified arms and the motto 'SAPIES DOMINABITUR ASTRIS', three pieces of which are dated 1551. Among work that appears to be by the same hand is a bowl in the museum at Arezzo, which bears on the back the name 'Andrea da Negroponto'.

Maestro Domenego was probably born in the early 1520s as he was already married to Catharina, eldest daughter of the potter Maestro Jacomo of Pesaro, when the latter made his will in January 1544. It is assumed that he worked in the family business in Venice until the deaths of Jacomo and his son Gasparo within a few months of each other in 1546 and then set up his own workshop. He was probably the 'domenego depentor over bochaler' (painter or potter) who was a beneficiary of the will, dated 22 December 1547, of a Venetian painter, Zouan Maria fu Giambattista della Giudecca. His documentary pieces range in date from 1562 to 1568/9 and two of them dated 1568 are signed as made in a workshop in the San Polo area. He probably died between 1568 and 1574, as his name does not appear in the register of deaths of the parish of San Polo which began in 1575, unless he moved elsewhere. His workshop produced dishes, and huge numbers of albarelli and bulbous storage jars, many of them decorated in a distinctive male or female busts enclosed by scrolled frames surrounded by foliage reserved in a blue ground. 'Ett de succo ro' may be a shortened version of elettuario de succo rob, which would have been an electuary with fruit juice, often sweetened with honey or sugar and evaporated to give it a syrupy consistency.
In 1980, archaeological excavations of a waste heap behind the house of the potter Orazio Pompei in Castelli conclusively identified the celebrated Orsini-Colonna pharmacy jars as products of the Pompei kilns. The discoveries were published by Marco Ricci et al., Le Maioliche Cinquecentesche di Castelli (1989).
The two albarelli offered in this sale (lot 943 and 944) correspond to the authors’ Group IV, examples of which are illustrated as catalogue numbers 248–251. It has been suggested that Group IV may in fact predate the other identified groups and, if so, represents a short-lived production phase that even precedes the activity of Orazio Pompei himself. Related kiln fragments are illustrated on p. 61, pl. 6, figs. 15–16.
Comparable albarelli are preserved in major collections, including the Musée national de Céramique, Sèvres; the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Giacomotti 1974, nos. 257–260); and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Rackham 1977, nos. 255–256).
