These lime pots were used to heat lime (chalk), a necessary ingredient in the preparation of betel, which the Vietnamese population used to chew since ancient times. The opening visible on the top of the body allowed the lime to be taken out with a spatula. The handle is similar to a betel vine, thus linking the object to its function. The lime pot symbolised the home and occupied a central place in the social life of the household. According to tradition, if the lime pot was broken, it would bring bad luck. This fundamental object in Vietnamese culture was placed on the altar of the family, the village or the pagoda.

- The State Hermitage Museum, inventory number ГЭ-1131, for the original painting 'Les Acteurs de la Comédie-Française' also known as 'Coquettes qui pour voir' or 'La Mascarade' by the French painter Jean Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), painted in 1711-1712. By the mid-18th C., the work belonged to Louis Antoine Crozat (1699-1770), Baron de Thiers, the younger brother of the Parisian merchant and art collector Pierre Crozat. It was acquired in 1772 for Empress Catherine II of Russia and has since been among the Russian imperial collections in the Hermitage and the Gatchina Palace. Now part of the museum's permanent exhibition, it remains on display in the Winter Palace. (link) (see reference image 10)
- The National Library of Spain, inventory number bdh0000144141, for the engraving by Henri Simon Thomassin (1688-1741), which probably served as the example for a smaller version as explained below. (link) (see reference image 11)
- The National Academy of Lincei, Italy, inventory number S-FC53606, for a small version by an unknown publisher, which was likely sent to China where it served as the source for the design of this tea service. It was a common practice for European merchants to send small versions of large engravings (mostly after important paintings) to the Chinese workshops, to have them reproduced on porcelain. (link) (see reference image 12)
- A single cup of this service is in the Lurie collection.
Given the rarity of this design we can assume that only one service was ordered and/or made it back to Europe. It was likely a French command, possibly from the entourage of the brothers Pierre and Louis Antoine Crozat. Pierre was one of the principal advisors to Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, and it was only after his death in 1740 that his collection passed to his younger brother, Louis Antoine, Baron de Thiers. After his death in 1770, the work found its permanent home in Russia through a sale brokered by the famous philosopher Denis Diderot, a prominent figure during the Age of Enlightenment.
Our sincere thanks to Will Motley and Peter Greendyke for their kind help with the description of this lot.

According to Howard and Ayers, the central design is after a European print entitled 'The Washtub' (Le Cuvier) after Le Mesle:
"The subject was a popular one for it allowed the lady to be naked with innocence, and it was copied over at least a decade. It is probable that the cup and saucer in this collection are 'matched', the former being coarser in execution and perhaps a few years later. Other examples: teabowl and saucer, Victoria & Albert Museum; Dutch-decorated plate, after the same original, but finer (Sotheby's, 25 May 1971, lot 207)." This plate features a simplified version of the well-known “Valentine” pattern. The original, more detailed scene—with palm and breadfruit trees—was likely drawn by Piercy Brett, official artist to Lord Anson during his West Indies voyages. A refined version was produced for Anson’s armorial service around 1743, and Brett’s illustrations later inspired engravings in Anson’s Voyages (1748). The design, once known as “Where is the Shepherd?”, remained popular for years. Variants appeared in underglaze blue with hounds, puppies, and Chinese-style shepherds in European dress beneath pine trees.

The economic bubble is described and illustrated in the contemporary source 'Het groote tafereel der dwaasheid, vertoonende de opkomst, voortgang en ondergang der actie, bubbel en windnegotie, in Vrankryk, Engeland en de Nederlanden, gepleegt in den jaar MDCCXX' (The great scene of madness, ....) of 1720.

This series of plates was made for the Dutch market and they are called 'Bubble' plates, since they were likely to have been made to satirize the South Sea Bubble 'mania' which occurred in the early 18th century. Besides the 'A-series' of this design, this 'B series' is the most rare. The South Sea Bubble refers to the South Sea Company which was a British joint stock company founded in 1711 in which many people made and lost considerable fortunes.

This plate is part of a series that classically depicts the Nativity, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. Variations exist, including versions with different borders as well as a polychrome series. The original engraving for this series was created by the Amsterdam artist Jan Luiken (1649-1712) and was included in a Lutheran Bible from the 18th century. (see scan)
The centre portrays the Crucifixion scene; Christ crowned with a halo and thorns, nailed upon a cross and above is the traditional caption INRI: Iesus Nazarenus Rex ludaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews). He is flanked by two crucified thieves, to his left and right are the Virgin Mary and St. John. A Roman centurion (presumably Longinus) speaks to Christ, while four soldiers (on the foreground) dice for the robe.

The mark, Shen De Tang Bo Gu Zhi 慎德堂博古製, translates to ‘Made in the antique style for the Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue’.
This hall mark appears on porcelains from the early Kangxi period and on imperial porcelains from the Daoguang period. The Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue was one of the private imperial residences of the old Summer Palace, the Yuanmingyuan, located northwest of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The hall was originally built by the Kangxi emperor and was expanded by the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors. Eventually the Daoguang emperor, who reigned from 1821-1850, used the hall as a daily residence until his death. The entire complex, including the Shendetang, was destroyed by European troops in 1860.

This fine blue and white porcelain plate depicts eight horses and a horse keeper, after careful research and comparison, we believe this is not The Eight Horses of Wang Mu. In that renowned depiction, the horses are primarily shown in dynamic, galloping poses, whereas this piece presents a serene scene by a stream, where a horse keeper is bathing the horses. Based on this, we believe that the painting is a tribute to Yuan Dynasty painter Zhao Mengfu’s Bathing Horses (趙孟頫浴馬圖卷). The overall composition evokes a sense of harmony between humans and nature, exuding tranquility and elegance, and can be compared to similar pieces in the collection of the Palace Museum in China. The arms and motto depicted belong to the Dutch Republic. The letters 'VOC are the cypher of the 'Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie', the Dutch East India Company. The design has been accurately copied from one side of a silver coin, issued by the Company in 1728 for use in the Far East. Even the ribbed milling of the coin is imitated in the inner rim of the plate.
The service to which this plate belonged was arguably commissioned by the Company to commemorate the successful launch of its new coinage and may possibly have been used by its employees at the Company's different official bases throughout the Far East.
Other pieces from this service include cups and saucers in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (no. 645 & a-1907), in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (Hong Kong, 1984, no.43), and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Le Corbeiller, 1974, no.43); a plate in the Mottahedeh collection (Howard and Ayers, 1978, vol.I, pl. 191); a plate, teapot, cup and saucer at the Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire, Brussels, Belgium (Jorg, 1989, no.36); a teapot without lid in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (Lunsingh Scheurleer, 1974, no.267), and a teapot in the Africana Museum, Johannesburg, South Africa (Woodward, 1974, pl.Al). Enamelled in the Netherlands, this Chinese plate depicts Brussels textile merchants. The top of the border shows the city's coat of arms, featuring the archangel Michael slaying a black devil. As a renowned textile centre, Brussels was especially known for its camlet, a fabric made from goat or camel hair imported from Asia. The inscription "Caro de Oro" and "Fabrica de Brusela" may be interpreted as "Brussels fabric, as precious as gold." The design likely derives from an engraved copper plate held in the Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden (inv. no. 11056). (link).

- Philips, New York, charity auction: Tibetan Art from the collection of the late Enrica Willi, 21 Oct. 1997, lot 161
- Collection Mrs Enrica Willi, until 1997
Mrs Enrica Willi was a frequent traveler to the Himalayan region, and one of the few European women of her generation to visit Tibet. Between 1982 and 1996 she lived periodically in Nepal. Her interest in the Himalayas and its people, and the instances of poverty she encountered during her trips, resulted in her supporting charitable institutions. Enrica Willi’s collection of Tibetan art was sold at Philips auction in New York in 1997 and the proceeds benefited charitable works.
Vaishravana
Vaishravana is the Guardian King of the Northern direction and holds a significant place in Tibetan Buddhism, where he is revered as Jambhala, the god of fortune and wealth. As Jambhala, Vaishravana bestows prosperity upon devotees, liberating them from material concerns and the fleeting nature of wealth, thereby enabling them to focus more keenly on their spiritual journey.
The depiction of Vaishravana in this bronze statue is both commanding and intricate. He is prominently seated on horseback, a symbol of his authority. The bronze is exquisitely cast and richly adorned with fine details. Vaishravana is dressed in a garment with wide sleeves, reminiscent of military attire, and engraved with patterns that evoke the look of armor. His boots are firmly strapped into the stirrups, emphasizing his readiness and power. His hair is styled in an elaborate fashion, crowned by a tall chignon, with braids cascading over his shoulders. The crown, along with floral ornaments and ribbons placed above his ears, adds to his majestic appearance, while his elongated earlobes are adorned with earrings. A long, pearl necklace drapes over his chest, following the curve of his stomach, further enhancing his regal presence.
The horse on which Vaishravana sits is rendered with equal care and detail. It is outfitted in full riding gear, including a saddle and a saddle blanket adorned with punctured floral patterns along the border, as well as a finely crafted halter. In terms of attributes, Vaishravana holds a vase in his raised right hand, symbolizing abundance, and a mongoose in his lower left hand. The mongoose, a symbol of generosity, is depicted spitting jewels from its mouth.
Although Vaishravana was venerated in both Tibet and China, the portrayal of the king on a Mongol horse in this particular piece suggests a Chinese origin. The Mongol horse was a source of great pride for Mongolian herdsmen and was highly valued during the Yuan dynasty, which was established in 1271 by Kublai Khan, the fifth khagan-emperor of the Mongol Empire. Despite the Yuan dynasties relatively short reign, ending in 1368, it was a period marked by cultural, scientific, and economic growth, which included the production of fine art such as this bronze. The depiction of deities on horseback would have resonated with the Mongol Khans, given the horse's central role in their culture and military strategy. Yuan stylistic features, such as the type of military dress, the floral ornaments above the ears, and the lion heads engraved on the upper arms, are evident in this piece.
This bronze statue is an incredibly rare and expressive example of its period and category. It represents a fascinating moment in Chinese history when Mongol culture, arts, and ideas left a lasting imprint on mainland China.

Provenance:
- Previously in the collection of Käthe & John Marsing.
Decorated with the arms of Backwell quartering Tyringham. Elizabeth Tyringham, daughter of Sir William Tyringham, married John Backwell in 1678. John was the son of Edward Backwell, goldsmith and banker in London. Their eldest son, Tyringham Backwell (for whom this service was most likely made), married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Francis Child, Lord Mayor of London from 1698-1699. Tyringham Backwell died in 1754. This service was more than likely brought from Canton by Tyingham's cousin; Duncomb Backwell, captain of the Princess Royal (1738) and the Northampton (1741). Duncomb was lost at sea in 1746.

Service ordered for Philibert Orry of Vignory (1689–1747), a prominent French statesman who served as Louis XV's General Controller of Finances and Director of the Crown’s Buildings. He supported industry, founded the Vincennes porcelain factory in 1740, and reformed the Compagnie des Indes to promote overseas trade. Forced to resign in 1745 due to Madame de Pompadour’s hostility, Orry died two years later. His Chinese armorial service is recorded in his posthumous inventory. His father and half-brother also commissioned similar services. The Orry arms originated from a sign used by their ancestor, Marc Orry, a 17th-century Parisian bookseller. (Source: A. Lebel, 2009)

Most likely commissioned for Dr. William Walker of Hertfordshire, Doctor of Laws and Judge Advocate. The ‘Chinese Imari’ service, created for his friend Lord Somers—who served as Solicitor General, Attorney General, and later Lord Chancellor—erroneously bears the Walker sun crest. Refer to D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, pp. 38, 73, and 177.
