The Chuxiu Gong Zhi seal mark on this charger reads 'made for the Palace of Gathered Elegance'. Built in the 18th year of Ming Emperor Yongle in 1420, the Palace was residence of concubines during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was renovated to celebrate Cixi's 50th birthday in 1884, and it is likely that this group of chargers where made around that time.

These "magic square" plates for the Islamic market are often decorated with Arabic numerals and Koranic verses, believed to have healing properties and used as charms. These items, dating back to the ninth century, were popular in Islamic regions like India, Malaya, and Indonesia. The squares, made up of four-by-four grids, consistently add up to the same number in any direction. Such porcelain was particularly valued for aiding in childbirth and warding off sickness, though the calligraphy was often inaccurate due to the Chinese painters' unfamiliarity with Arabic script.

The Friesland dish is part of a collection of territorial armorial dishes and barber's bowls that feature coats of arms from various Dutch, English, Flemish and French provinces and cities. These dishes, likely privately commissioned, were decorated with specific heraldic symbols, including the lordship of Frisia (Friesland). The dishes are circular, with a central coat of arms, often surmounted by a crown or bonnet, and a scroll beneath the shield displaying the territory's name. The Friesland dish is one of many in this set, representing the historical regions of the Low Countries.

A basin of this size is very exceptional and extremely rare. It is grisaille-and-gold painted with a classical marriage scene and Dutch coats of arms. The ship depicted in the central scene is The East Indiaman Slooten, which was in Canton in 1749. This indicates that this service was more than likely commissioned by Annaeus Lodewijk Bettingh, first captain or master of the ship, and shows the marriage between him and A.H. Meyers in 1750, both their coats of arms represented in the scene.
The scene shows the classical marriage scene full of emblems of love and marriage, the bride and groom in a domed columned interior beside an altar with two perched loving doves. In the clouds above the altar, holding a heart, is Juno, the mother goddess and wife of the highest Roman god, Jupiter, accompanied by a peacock. Crowning the groom is Venus, the Roman goddess of love, and the cherub represents Cupid, her male counterpart. In the foreground Neptune and sea nymphs emerge from among rushes. The arched entrance is superscribed with the Latin vow 'SEMPER AMOR PRO TE FIRMISSIMUS ATQUE FIDELIS' ("my love for you will always be steadfast and true"). The pillars on either side are supporting the two coats of arms. Behind the pillars is a figure holding a mirror on the left and one with a fruit basket and wheat sheaves on the right. The mirror represents truth and the fruit fertility.
The scene could be based on the original engraving by Guillaume-François-Laurent Debrie, 1729, as noted on the poem and drama for the wedding of Levi Oppenheim and Rebeccah Cohen by David Franco Mendes, Amsterdam, 1789 (see scan, courtesy of Ets Haim Manuscripts, link).
All known plates with his design were made for the Dutch market and bear Dutch arms (ibid., p. 204). Similar plates with different arms are in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (Lunsingh Scheurleer, 1974, no. 284); and in the Mottahedeh collection (Howard and Ayers, 1978, vol. II, no. 391); and a large serving plate is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Clunas, 1987, pl. 49). (Source: The British Museum)

The cigarette case features a Russian imperial seal adorned with a diamond and is crafted from 24k gold. It also has a cabochon sapphire-inset push button. The gilt interior bears the maker's mark of Mikhail Perkhin (1860-1903).
Mikhail Perkhin was one of the most prominent workmasters at the House of Fabergé, second only to the famous Michael Evlampievich Perchin. Perkhin was particularly known for his attention to detail and ability to work with various materials, including gold, silver, and enamel. He worked for Fabergé from 1884 until his death in 1903 and was responsible for creating some of the most intricate and luxurious objects, including cigarette cases, jewellery, and the iconic Fabergé eggs.
